Thunder-crack
When you hear this for the first time, what do you imagine?
Thunder hits your house, and crack everything? ⚡🏠
No, that’s not true.
“Thunder-crack” is translated to “Kaminari-okoshi “ in Japanese.

What is Kaminari-okoshi ?

Kaminari-okoshi is a traditional Japanese snack made from puffed rice, sugar, and often mixed with peanuts or other nuts. It’s typically shaped into small, rectangular blocks or bars. The snack is popular in Japan, especially during festivals and as a souvenir from various regions. It has a crunchy texture and a sweet flavor, making it a favorite among both children and adults.👩

“Kaminari-Okoshi” History

Kaminari-okoshi has a rich history dating back several centuries in Japan. Its origins are believed to be associated with the Kaminarimon gate of Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. 🏮The gate, which translates to “Thunder Gate,” is one of the most famous landmarks in Tokyo and is adorned with statues of the Shinto gods of thunder and wind.

Legend has it that during the Edo period (1603-1868), a sweet shop near the Kaminarimon gate created a snack resembling the sound of thunder (kaminari) by mixing puffed rice with sugar syrup and pressing it into molds. This snack was called “Kaminari-okoshi” in honor of the thunder gate. By the way,”okoshi” can be written down two ways in Japanese.
One is “粔籹”, which means the sweets (mixing puffed rice with sugar syrup and pressing it into molds). The other is “興”,which means enjoying ,make merry, and dancing. So it is like dancing and popping with the thunder sounds. Like this “Kaminari-okoshi” has local rooted history and interesting meanings.

 My Recommendation

Here is my recommendation.

〇 Tokiwado kaminariokoshi main shop

This is a famous, lots of variety, delicious kaminariokoshi store, and the origin of it !
In addition, this store offers free taste, so you can enjoy many kind of kaminariokoshi.

It is just next to the Kaminarimon, so you can find it easily.
There are many kinds of sweat flavor like sugar, brown sugar, caramel, milk tea, and green tea…it is like a famous coffee shop ★🗽.

But “Norishio のり塩 (Seaweed and Salt)” is the best.

First, when you eat it, you feel the sweet taste which is natural in kaminariokoshi, but the more one chews, the more you can feel the umami of seaweed.
So, even one of our staff who doesn’t like sweets could eat it !
Do you wanna try this?
