15 Japanese Gummies: Taste, Texture, and Popularity Compared

All regions

In many countries, gummy candy is still seen as something mainly for kids.
But in Japan, it’s a completely different story.

Walk into any convenience store or supermarket, and you’ll find entire sections dedicated to gummies. What’s more surprising is how popular they are among adults. From my perspective, this strong adult fanbase is something quite unique to Japan.

As someone who absolutely loves gummies, I couldn’t resist diving deeper into this world. So, I decided to compare a wide range of Japanese gummies myself.

Compared to overseas products—often represented by simple, classic hard gummies like Haribo—Japanese gummies offer an incredible variety in texture, flavor, and overall experience.

In this article, let’s explore and compare the diverse world of Japanese gummies together.

15 Grape-Flavored Gummies Compared!

So, let’s jump right in.
I’ve picked out 15 different gummies available in Japan, each with its own unique characteristics.

To make things easier to follow, I grouped them by type and compared them side by side. I’ll share my thoughts on each category, along with how they differ in texture and flavor.

And of course, I’ve also put together an overall ranking—based entirely on my personal taste and preferences—so take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully it’ll help you find your next favorite gummy!

Category 1: Classic Gummies – Soft & Juicy Texture

At first glance, these gummies may look similar to classic options like Haribo. However, Japanese gummies tend to be noticeably softer. Japanese gummies often aim for a more tender, almost melt-in-your-mouth feel, along with a juicier flavor profile.

1. Kajyu Gummy (Fruit Juice Gummy) – Left

First released in 1988, this is a long-selling classic that has remained popular for decades. While it may look simple, the texture is carefully adjusted to match Japanese preferences, making it softer and easier to chew.

As soon as you open the package, a rich, grape juice–like aroma bursts out. It may not be the most exciting or unique option, but the balance of flavor and texture is excellent—easily earning it a spot among the top-ranked gummies.

2. Kororo – Center

This was by far my top recommendation out of everything I tried 💡
It starts with a rich, almost wine-like aroma, followed by a unique outer layer that bursts like fruit skin when you bite into it.

The inside is even softer than Kajyu Gummy, with an incredibly smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture that feels almost liquid on the tongue. Absolutely no complaints—this takes the #1 spot overall without a doubt.

3. Pureral Gummy – Right

This gummy combines two different textures: a soft, airy white layer with a slightly chewy, fluffy feel, and a colorful layer that’s juicy and bouncy.

It’s a bit of a unique option within this category, but the grape aroma comes through strongly from both layers. Interestingly, there isn’t a huge difference in flavor between the two—the contrast is mainly in the texture, which makes it a fun and enjoyable experience.

Category 2: Hard Gummies – Firm, Chewy, and Satisfying

Next up, we’re comparing gummies with a firmer, more substantial bite.
From sugar-coated varieties to powder-dusted ones, there’s quite a range—but they all share one thing in common: a strong, satisfying chew.

1. Ninja Meshi – Far Left

This is by far the hardest gummy in this category, with an intense, long-lasting chew.
You really have to work through it, which makes it surprisingly satisfying despite its small size—perfect for a quick sugar boost during work.

The grape flavor is stronger than you might expect from its appearance, and it’s not just about the texture. With both great taste and chewiness, it was also a hit among the staff.

【Sweetness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆
【Ranking】3位

2. Tsubu Gummy – Left Center

While its shape is similar to Ninja Meshi, this one is slightly softer and much easier to bite through.

It features three different grape flavors, each with its own distinct profile: a tangy Muscat, a sweeter Kyoho grape, and a rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon–inspired flavor.

【Firmness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆
【Sourness】⭐☆☆☆☆
【Sweetness】⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
【Ranking】9位

3. Shigekix – Right Center

First released in 1992, this is another long-selling favorite that has been loved for over 30 years.

It’s extremely sour—enough to make your face scrunch up—but that intense tang is oddly addictive and keeps you coming back for more. I personally enjoy it, though it’s definitely a polarizing choice.

The sourness tends to steal the spotlight, but it’s also quite firm. While it doesn’t reach the level of Ninja Meshi, it still ranks as the second hardest gummy in this category.

【Sweetness】⭐☆☆☆☆
【Ranking】8位

4. TOUGH Gummy – Far Right

Judging by the name, you might expect this to be the hardest of the bunch—but compared to the others, the gummy itself isn’t quite as firm.

That said, each piece is almost twice as thick, so it still takes a fair bit of effort to bite through. The larger size also makes it very satisfying overall.

You can enjoy two different flavors, which adds a nice bit of variety.

Category 3: Sugar-Coated Gummies – Gritty Texture with a Tangy Kick

Next, we’ll compare gummies coated in sweet-and-sour sugar powder.
They may look similar at first glance, but differences in the size and texture of the sugar crystals create surprisingly distinct eating experiences.

1. Fettuccine Gummy – Far Left

Inspired by Italian pasta, this sweet-and-sour gummy is shaped like flat fettuccine noodles.
It offers a nice balance between a moderate chew and a light gritty texture from the sugar coating.

It’s definitely tasty, though compared to the others, it may feel a bit less distinctive in terms of overall character.

【Chewiness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆
【Sourness】⭐⭐☆☆☆
【Ranking】7位

2. Pure Gummy – Left Center

A heart-shaped, long-selling favorite with over 20 years of history.
The gritty texture from the sugar coating is relatively mild, making it less about crunch and more about the gummy itself.

Rather than being firm and bouncy, the texture is closer to a soft, slightly sticky jelly, which really sets it apart from the others. The balance of sweetness and tartness is excellent—and surprisingly addictive.

【Grittiness】⭐☆☆☆☆
【Chewiness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆
【Sourness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆
【Ranking】6位

3. Sharimoni Gummy – Right Center

This gummy delivers an intense crunchy, gritty texture—almost like biting into granulated sugar.
Each piece is fairly large and satisfying, but the gummy itself is quite soft, which creates a clear and enjoyable contrast in texture.

It also has a well-balanced tartness that really brings out the grape flavor.
One of my personal favorites, and definitely a gummy I’d highly recommend.

【Sourness】⭐⭐⭐☆☆

4. Kirafuwa Gummy – Far Right

Thicker than the other gummies, this one offers a more satisfying chew with a noticeably firmer texture. Among this type, it has the mildest sourness, allowing the sweetness to stand out more prominently.

The sugary coating isn’t as intensely crunchy as it looks, but adds a pleasant, moderate texture. Its colorful star-shaped design is also a charming highlight!

【Sourness】⭐☆☆☆☆

Category 4: Unique & Unconventional Gummies – A Different Kind of Texture!

We’ve also picked out a selection of gummies that stand apart from the rest with their truly distinctive textures. Many of these are a bit unconventional, but if you’re looking for a fun and memorable snacking experience, they’re definitely worth a try!

1. Shari-in Gummy – Far Left

This gummy features a fun dual-layer structure, with a sugary filling packed inside. The grape flavor is rich and fruity, while the contrast between the smooth outer layer and the crunchy, grainy center creates a satisfying texture.

The balance of sweetness is just right, making it an enjoyable treat from start to finish. Among this category, it easily stands out as the most delicious—highly recommended for anyone looking to experience both unique texture and great flavor!

【Juiciness】⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
【Addictiveness】⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
【Ranking】5位

2. Sakeru Gummy – Left Center

This gummy comes in a large, sheet-like form that can be easily torn apart along its vertical fibers, making for a fun and interactive experience.

It has a slightly tangy flavor reminiscent of lactic acid drinks, along with a moderate hint of grape. Compared to the juicy, fruit-forward gummies introduced in the first category, the flavor leans more artificial—making it better suited for enjoyment as a playful treat rather than for its taste alone.

【Fun Factor】⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
【Juiciness】⭐⭐☆☆☆
【Addictiveness】⭐☆☆☆☆
【Ranking】15位

3. Mochira Gummy – Right Center

This one feels less like a typical gummy and more like something between mochi and candy. The outer texture has a slightly cool sensation.

It lacks the usual chewiness you’d expect from gummies, offering instead an experience closer to eating a soft sugar confection. While it does have a grape flavor, whether it truly qualifies as a “gummy” is up for debate.

【Juiciness】⭐⭐☆☆☆
【Addictiveness】⭐⭐☆☆☆
【Ranking】14位

4. Marosh Gummy – Far Right

This gummy starts with a pleasantly chewy, bouncy texture typical of gummies, then gradually melts in your mouth like a marshmallow—offering a unique two-stage sensation.

The sweet-and-tangy powder coating provides a nice hint of grape flavor, creating a well-balanced combination of taste and texture that’s both fun and satisfying.
