January


1. Hatsumode

Event Period:
From January 1st–3rdHatsumode is a Japanese custom where people visit a temple or shrine to pray for good luck, health, and happiness in the New Year between January 1st and 3rd. Public transportation runs all night on New Year’s Eve.

Fushimi-Inari, Yasaka shrine, Heian shrine, Shimogamo shrine, Kitano tenmangu shrine, Kibune shrine, Kiyomizu temple, etc.

2. Karuta-Hajime

at 13:00pm“Karuta Hajime” means the first Karuta game of the year. Classical poems from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (poetry collection) are read aloud as women in elegant 12-layered kimono, called Karuta hime, compete in a graceful game of karuta.
3. Kemari Hajime

start at 13:30“Kemari”, a traditional event that was introduced from China during the Nara period and recreates the elegant pastime of Heian aristocrats, is performed.
4. Touka Ebisu

2025This festival honors Ebisu, the only Japanese-born of the Seven Gods of Fortune, with prayers for good harvests, thriving business, and successful fishing, celebrated through various rituals and events
5. Tou-shiya
- Event Period:

2025Inspired by Edo-period archery, competitors in festive attire shoot arrows at targets 120 meters away, showcasing Kyoto’s unique elegance.
February


1. Setsubun Sai

2025Ritual events called the ‘Tsuina-shiki’ demon-chasing ritual and bean-throwing take place and you can even get special lucky beans.

2. Baika Sai

February 2025On the anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane, who loved plum blossoms, geiko and maiko from Kamishichiken perform a tea ceremony.

1. Hina Matsuri

every yearThe event is well known as “Hinamatsuri,” during which a dance is performed by the three court ladies (Sannin Kanjo) accompanied by the music of the five musicians (Gonin Bayashi).市比賣神社の年中行事:女人守護・市場守護のいちひめ神社京都、河原町五条に位置する女人厄除け、市場守護で有名な市比賣神社(いちひめ神社)。■ Recommended spots:

2. Nagashi Bina

every yearIt’s a traditional ritual where misfortunes are transferred to hina dolls, which are then floated down the Mitarashi River to pray for children’s health.
3. Momono Houe

every yearOn a day when three lucky numbers align, a Buddhist ceremony is held featuring kenga (a flower offering ritual) and a katen (ikebana exhibition). A special “peach charm” for women is also given.
4. Plum tree blooming

late MarchFrom mid-February to mid-March—and in some places until late March—the pale pink blossoms reach their peak, offering a beautiful preview of spring. In the city, the best time to see them is in mid-March.■ Recommended spots:

1. Haruno Odori
“Haruno Odori” is the collective name for the Miyako Odori, Kyo Odori, Kitano Odori, and Kamogawa Odori (held in May) —traditional dance performances by geiko and maiko from Kyoto’s four hanamachi (geisha districts): Gion Kobu, Miyagawacho, Pontocho, and Kamishichiken.

2. Cherry blossom

2025Cherry blossoms in Kyoto usually bloom around March 26, though this depends on the year’s weather. During the season, many temples and shrines hold nighttime viewings, offering a stunning display that surpasses other seasons.

3. Ohka Sai

every yearA ceremonial procession of over 200 horse-mounted warriors and weaving princesses takes place as part of a religious event. Nighttime cherry blossom viewing is available during the blooming season.
4. Seiryu-kai

every yearBased on the legend of a dragon, an incarnation of the Kannon, flying to the Otowa Falls to drink its water, this ritual is held. The 18-meter-long dragon figure is magnificent.
5. Kamo Kyoku sui no en

2025A Heian-era banquet is recreated, where participants compose waka poems before the sake cups flowing down the stream in Shokeien come to them. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and once the 300 seats are filled, registration closes.

1. Kamo Odori

2. Fujinomori Sai / Kakeuma Shinji

2025年5月5日鎖帷子(くさりかたびら)を模した衣装を着て、200メートルもの参道を、様々な技を披露しながら一気に駆け抜けます。
3. Aoi matsuri (Kamo Matsuri)

5月15日三大京都祭りに数えられる由緒ある初夏の祭りで、500年の平安装束を身にまとった人々が行列をなし、路頭の儀が行われます。
4. Kamogawa Noryou

~9月30日まで川沿いに石垣や堤が整備され始めた頃に歓楽街として発展し、今では二条から五条の鴨川沿いにある飲食店約90店舗が優雅なひと時を演出します。ランチからディナー、和食から洋食まで選択肢は様々。

1. Kibune Sai
- 1st June, 2025At Kibune Shrine, this is the most important festival of the year, where a portable shrine carrying the spirit of the deity is paraded through the town with traditional music.
2. Kyoto Takiginou

2. Gion matsuri

every yearIt’s one of Japan’s top three festivals, started to drive away epidemics. People set up 66 tall spears to pray for good health. The city comes alive with music and big float parades on the 17th and 24th
3. Tanabata matsuri

until 20:00)It started as an ancient rain-making ritual and became a festival to thank for water. You’ll see bamboo decorations and wish strips for Tanabata. There’s also a beautiful nighttime light-up.
4. Motomiya sai

2025The whole shrine and Mt. Inari light up with donated lanterns, creating a magical vibe. It feels like you’re walking through a dream. Around the main hall, you’ll also find about 400 lantern paintings on display.
5. Mitarashi matsuri

from 9:00~20:00Also known as the “Foot-Dipping Ritual,” it’s held on the Day of the Ox in midsummer. People dip their feet in a sacred pond to pray for good health and protection from illness. There are also food stalls and fun festival vibes.

2. Mitarashi matsuri

2nd to 18th.An old Tanabata ritual where people step into the river to purify themselves, revived in 2016. Now it features night shrine visits and the lively Kitano Summer Festival.
3. Gosan No Okuribi

2025The Gozan no Okuribi, following the “Aoi,” “Gion,” and “Jidai” festivals, marks the end of Obon with fires shaped like “Daimonji,” “Myohō,” “Funagata,” “Sadaimonji,” and “Torii.” Starting at 8 PM, the fires light up in sequence, five minutes apart, creating a stunning display.
4. Tou-rou nagashi

the website。The tradition started with floating lanterns to honor the spirits of the war dead. Today, it’s a way to send ancestors and spirits to the Pure Land, and you can join in the lantern floating for this remembrance.

1. Hassaku matsuri

9月第一日曜日五穀豊穣を願う明治から約130年続く祭り。五穀豊穣や家内安全を祈願して、ユネスコ無形文化財の六斎念仏踊りや、新生児を土俵に上げる「赤ちゃんの土俵入り」が行われます。
2. Seimei Taisai

9月23日秋分の日とその前夜に行われる晴明神社で一番大きなお祭り。鼓笛隊や御神輿などに続き、300人余りが行をなして地域を練り歩きます。
3. Gikyosai

2025年9月15日偉大な功績を果たした源義経が、かつて幼少期に偲ぶ法要や合気道の組手が披露されます。
4. Mitsuki No Yube

ご確認下さい。中秋の名月に龍頭鷁首舟(船首に龍の頭がついた高瀬舟)を浮かべ、夜空の月と広沢池に映る月とを見比べる優雅なひと時を演出します。特別チケットは事前申し込み制。広沢池エリアの観覧(有料)も可能です。

1. Zuiki matsuri

10月1日~5日秋の収穫、五穀豊穣に感謝する祭りで、八乙女舞の奉納や神輿が地域を練り歩きます。
2. Awata matsuri

(毎年スポーツ
の日の前々日)数日間で行われる御出祭、夜渡り神事、神幸祭、例大祭を総称で「粟田神社大祭」と呼び、山車や御神輿の巡行や舞踊の奉納などが行われます。
3. Funaoka Taisai

毎年10月19日織田信長の偉大な功勲を後世に伝えるため、桶狭間の戦いの前に舞ったとされる仕舞「敦盛」や舞楽の奉納が行われます。
4. Jidai matsuri
- Event Period: :
毎年10月22日京都三大祭りの一つで、桓武天皇の平安京遷都を記念する大祭で、8つの時代の芸術などを再現されます。
ルートは正午に京都御所を出発し、京都市役所→三条大橋→平安神宮へ順番に行列が巡行します。
5. Yuki jinja Reisai / Kurama no Himatsuri

10月22日篝火が一斉にたかれ、辺り一帯が火の光に包まれる京都三大奇祭のひとつ。平安時代に京都御所から鞍馬の里に祭神をお迎えした様を再現するお祭り。
6. Momiji matsuri

あたりから
1か月間10月末から色づき始める紅葉を楽しむ京都の紅葉を先取って鑑賞、参拝できます。期間中は菓子付きの茶席が設けられ、ゆったりしながら紅葉を眺めることが出来ます。
November

12月上旬まで神社仏閣、古き良き建物が多くある京都においては、日本屈指の紅葉スポットと言えます。また期間中には夜間特別拝観も行っているところもあり、ライトアップに浮かぶ紅葉は圧巻です。
2. Arashiyama Maple Festival

毎年11月の
第2日曜日平安貴族が優雅に紅葉を楽しんだ様を、大堀川に船を浮かべ再現されます。今様や平安管弦の演奏なども披露されます。
3. Gion Odori
- Event Period: :
毎年11月1日
~10日毎年演目のテーマが変わり、オリジナルの脚本のもと演じられる舞踏公演。長唄や舞踏メドレーなどが披露されるのが特徴で予約必須です。チケットはオンラインまたは会館窓口で直接購入できます。

1. Shimai Tenjin

毎年12月25日北野天満宮では毎月25日に天神様の日となっており、特に年末の12月25日には終い天神は冬の風物詩として有名です。多くの露店が出店し、とても賑やかな雰囲気になります。
2. Wokera matsuri
- Event Period: :

17時半頃大晦日の17時ごろから夜通し火を絶やさず、境内に灯された灯篭とともに、人々の願いが記された「をけら木」を焚き、1年間の無病息災を祈願する儀式です。
3. Joya no Kane

23時頃~京都市内では、大晦日に除夜の鐘見学・体験できる神社が沢山あり、毎年たいへん多くの訪問客が特別な夜を過ごします。事前予約制や先着順など様々な方式で案内されますので、事前に確認が必要です。
